PayPal Business vs Friends & Family: Key Differences, Fees & When to Use Each

PayPal Business is a seller-focused transaction type that protects both buyer and seller through formal invoices, dispute mediation, and seller fees. Friends & Family is a personal transfer designed for gifts, shared bills, or reimbursements without purchase protection and, in most countries, without fees when funded by a PayPal balance or bank account.

People confuse them because the same “Send money” button offers both choices, and sellers sometimes ask buyers to use Friends & Family to dodge fees—an innocent-looking move that strips the buyer of refund rights and violates PayPal policy.

Key Differences

Business payments carry purchase protection, seller fees (2.9% + fixed fee in the US), and appear on tax reports. Friends & Family transfers are fee-free domestically when funded by PayPal balance/bank, offer zero buyer protection, and cannot be reversed if something goes wrong.

Which One Should You Choose?

Buying goods or services? Always pick Business. Sending birthday cash, splitting rent, or paying your roommate back for tacos? Use Friends & Family. Choosing the wrong option risks frozen accounts, lost money, or unexpected fees.

Can I change the payment type after sending?

No. Once a payment is marked as Friends & Family, PayPal will not convert it to Business.

Will PayPal refund me if a Friends & Family deal goes bad?

Generally no. Without purchase protection, refunds depend on the recipient voluntarily returning the money.
