Int vs Long: When to Choose 32-bit vs 64-bit Integers

Int is a 32-bit signed integer, range –2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647. Long is a 64-bit signed integer, range –9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. Both store whole numbers; only the bit-width and value ceiling change.

Developers default to Int because it “feels normal,” then panic when user IDs, file sizes, or TikTok view counts overflow. It’s like cramming a whale into a koi pond—looks fine until it grows.

Key Differences

Int uses 4 bytes, faster on 32-bit CPUs, fits in registers. Long uses 8 bytes, shines on 64-bit CPUs, doubles RAM cost. Overflow? Int silently wraps; Long postpones the crisis.

Which One Should You Choose?

Pick Int for loop counters, small enums, RGB values. Choose Long for timestamps after 2038, database primary keys, Bitcoin balances. When in doubt, prototype with Int, profile, then upgrade.

Can Int ever be larger than Long?

No. By definition, Long’s 64 bits dwarf Int’s 32 bits; the gap is fixed.

Does using Long always slow my app?

On 64-bit hardware, the difference is negligible; on 32-bit chips, expect extra cycles and memory.
