Entity vs. Relationship in DBMS: Key Differences Explained

An Entity is a real-world object (a customer, a product) you store as a row. A Relationship is the meaningful link between those objects (customer “places” order) captured by foreign keys.

People picture tables as rectangles, so they assume every rectangle is an Entity. They forget the invisible lines that connect them—Relationships—turning isolated rectangles into a living, queryable story.

Key Differences

Entities have attributes (name, price). Relationships have cardinality (one-to-many) and constraints (referential integrity). Entities live in tables; relationships live in foreign-key columns, junction tables, or ER diagrams.

Which One Should You Choose?

Design entities first: what nouns must be stored. Then add relationships: how those nouns interact. Skipping relationships breeds orphan data; skipping entities leaves nothing to relate.

Examples and Daily Life

Think of Instagram: User and Post are entities. The “uploaded” relationship links them. When you tap “like,” another relationship (User likes Post) is born, not a new entity.

Can a relationship become an entity?

Yes—when it gains extra attributes (e.g., Enrollment with grade), convert it into an associative entity.

Do NoSQL databases drop relationships?

No; they often embed related data inside documents, trading explicit foreign keys for application-side joins.
